Chilton Grounds Farm Workshop Day

On a rather bright and mild afternoon on the 5th October 2024, Chilton Grounds Farm in Buckinghamshire very kindly hosted a workshop day for members to enjoy a social catch-up, learn about current animal health and welfare practices, meet some new faces and brush up on their knowledge of the breed. Duncan Parker and Diana Bird along with their son Charlie organised a fantastic event, which was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by all, with members travelling from far and wide.

David Ford of the Cellar Bank flock discussed breed points, comparing faults and merits of individual sheep in a pen of ram lambs. He covered the topics of wool, carcase, mouth, skin colour and body conformation amongst other aspects, with members able to ask questions and better understand the breed standard – which was particularly helpful for some of the newer members present. Tags and the difference between a blue and orange circular WLSBA tag were also explained, along with white/black sheep genetics (more about Black Wensleydale genetics can be found on the Registrations page).

A selection of fleeces were also brought by members to be judged and discussed, With Sue Holdich (Millhouse), Ali Parsons (Longcroft) and Marion Starkings (Manor Farm) explaining best practices for the presentation of fleeces in fleece classes at agricultural shows. There was also some interesting discussion about spinning Wensleydale wool, both commercially and by hand, as well as using it for crafting. At the end of the wool discussions and before breaking for lunch, Anna Pennell was thanked for her service as secretary and presented with a few gifts.

After a hearty lunch provided by all attending, with much lighthearted chatter and regaling of tales, the day concluded with an enlightening presentation given by Charlie Parker, Diana and Duncan’s son and practicing vet. Charlie discussed iceberg diseases, best worming practices and the new Animal Health and Welfare Pathway provided by DEFRA, which he felt could be a great benefit to many members.

It was agreed by all that more events of a similar nature should take place, with the social aspect being particularly enjoyable as well as having the opportunity to see how others farm their Wensleydales. We hope to arrange more events in the not-too-distant future! Please feel free to contact the secretary if you have any ideas for events, they are most welcome. Below are some photographs from the day.
